    The Porsche 993 series 911s from 1994 through 1998 had a production fill of 10W-40 Mobil 1. (yes the 993 3.6l had CATs). The M1 formulation of that day had approximately 1,700PPM ZDDP - ZINC. .. Fast forward to year 2024 what to do? .. The M1 10W-40 or the M1 15W-50 formulation has much less ZDDP,,, in the range of 1,200 PPM.. What to do?

    Just watched your video on your daughter's car. Searched and found this. As I see this the question was will zinc damage my cat. Your answer seems to be that it can if it gets there. I use high zinc and phosphorus oils often and was actually led to believe it was the phosphorus that did the damage. Video is okay but I find the answer evasive.

    Lake, going to oil company spec sheets as well as the Owner's Manual, they list an "Approval", in the case of my Porsche, that is an A40. But is that a "specification" like API SN Plus for the 5W-40 grade? How does an A40 coincide with a specification?

    I drive a 1979 Buick with 3.8 V6 and use Valvoline Racing Oil 20W50 and the car still has to pass state emission test. So I am hoping the catalytic convertor will not be ruined. The engine is not using oil as far as I can tell. Just leaks a bit. Oil is changed every 800 to 1500 miles.

    • @HiTechOilCo
      @HiTechOilCo 2 месяца назад

      A 1979 Buick would be better off with a 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil viscosity. This will improve fuel economy, reduce engine wear, increase power and throttle response. Racing oils are not meant for street cars. Why change the oil so frequently? That's causing dry starts after every oil change, allowing metal to metal wear to occur, robbing many miles of life from the engine. It's also tossing out good oil and that's expensive. - 30 year independent AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants Dealer.

    It’s the same with Nissan. I bought a new 2020 Nissan Altima 2.5 DI non-turbo. I always buy new and always change out the first oil at 500-1000 miles. Thank god I did on this car. Not knowing the fuel dilution issue, I almost had a heart attack when I pulled the drain plug and the most horrendous fuel smelling oil came out. I wasn’t even trying to smell the oil. The stench was over powering. I truly thought my engine was toast. I immediately read online that this was “normal” for DI engines. Fortunately the problem seemed to fix itself after a few thousand miles. I change my oil with Pensoil platinum synthetic every 6k miles and the oil smells normal with a hint of fuel and it doesn’t seem to burn any oil either. I’ve heard that the 8k-10k oil changes on these DI engines are killers on the bearings and cam. Now, if your like me and trade in your car with under 100k miles then it probably doesn’t matter but buyer beware.

    This is why I only buy Toyota vehicles . They developed their D4S system of direct injection along with using port injection. Dual fuel injection system. Still have port injectors to wash the back of the intake valves. On the tacomas they even have a mode where the computer will put the engine into direct injector self cleaning mode to blow the carbon off the injectors while still being able to idle the engine using port injection. To top it off I run amsoil signature series in my Toyotas for added protection .

    Hi Lake. It's funny... I've been experimenting on some vehicles w higher zddp... Like in the 1600ppm range and so far no cat problems. If it does damage one, it will b worth the experiment to know for sure and for the extra wear protection on a motor. But here's my question.... I actually use mobil1 20/50 v twin motorcycle in a car without a cat. It has one of the best additive packages I've seen. It has the same Moly as other Mobil 1's and a lot of boron. Approaching 300 ppm. The zddp is around 1600. Aside from cat issues, this is one of the best oils I've seen on paper and can't see why it's not ok. I'm wonder what the base oils r... If they r group 4 and 5. It also has a high 20.8 viscosity and really good high temp performance and anti shear. The only thing I'm wondering, is that it has around 2200 calcium. Is that too much where it would counter the zddp and boron/moly? Or would u still expect it to b a really good anti wear and also a good cleaner. That film strength too.... Seems really good. Just that calcium question that's haunting me. And I do wonder about the base oils and what group they r. Any light u could shed on those questions and what u think of the quality of that oil, would b very appreciated. Thanks so much!

    Why is diesel engine oil different formulation? Is the a absence of a gasoline type of catalytic converter allow different formulation of oil with more engine protection additives with out damage to the emission systems? I have been told that a flat tapper engine requires protection form oil additives to limit wear. Did the reformulation of oil usher in roller camshaft use on a larger scale because of premature cam wear failure? What kind of oil should my 1973 Big Block LS4 Corvette be using for the protection of the camshaft?
